Dr. Deepak Vohra didn’t take the stage. He claimed it. And for the 73-year-old Advisor to the Prime Minister of India, every word was a diplomatic handshake and a military salute — all wrapped in Dilli humour. When I was invited to anchor the International Conference at the Asia Coat + Ink Show 2024 by AIPIMA, I expected a prestigious gathering of ink industry leaders. What I didn’t expect was a public masterclass in how real soft power sounds when it’s not trying to sell you anything.

“I have a birth certificate that says 73,” he told the room. “Just to tell people, hey, I’m actually 73.”What followed was an emcee exchange that broke protocol and built something more durable — laughter. “Sir, I anchor for a living. I meet MDs and CEOs who bleed Bharat — I call them the unofficial brand ambassadors of India. But to meet one who’s officially earned the title? I’m going home, show’s over.”He smiled and responded, “You are the daughter of India.”And just like that, the audience applauded not just the man, but the moment — no script, no sponsor, just sovereignty in voice.

This wasn’t an easy audience. Global vendors, coating technocrats, industrial specialists, high-trust procurement leaders — the kind of room where credentials speak louder than charm. But this time, presence was the credential. I asked the audience, “If you had to guess who’s 73 between Dr. Vohra and me, what would you say?” The laughter that followed wasn’t about vanity. It was about vitality. The kind that India is now learning to export as a leadership language. That’s what a prime ministerial voice can do — locate you in a lineage of pride, power, and purpose.
